Austrian Refugees in the U.S. Mountain Troops of World War II

The exhibition showcases the fate of some of the sportiest Austrian refugees from National Socialism, ski stars like Hans Kolb, photographers like Curt Krieser and mountaineers, who served in the 10th Mountain Division – the only unit in the U.S. Army of WW II specialized in mountain warfare and operations in climatically extreme conditions. Their experiences from training at Mount Rainier in a high valley in Colorado to combat duty in Italy, to their postwar journeys that brought them back to Lech am Arlberg and Vienna. Dr. Traussnig gave us insights into the work of a historian, who spends endless hours in American archives to find out more about war and its consequences.
