14 Days …
Inspired by the recent ORF 1 documentary about an experiment with students in Upper Austria who lived without their smartphones for three weeks, a similar experiment is taking place at GIBS. After watching the documentary in Digital Literacy, Year 3 classes have decided that they would like to try out their own mini-experiment. So, the Year 3 Digital Literacy team has worked with the students and came up with their own smartphone experiment. It will run for two weeks, from 1 December to 15 December and participation is entirely voluntary. The rules are simple: no smartphones. Simple cellphones are allowed. Students taking part in the experiment will document their experience in either a written or video diary or by using voice memos to keep track of their mood, emotions, challenges, discoveries, etc. along the way. The goal of the smartphone experiment is to give students a chance to reflect on their smartphone use, habits, and the impact these have on their daily lives and well-being. The whole experiment should serve as a personal experience for them.
The students as well as both Digital Literacy teachers are excited to see what the next two weeks will bring…
Stay tuned! More updates and reflections are coming soon.
