a) How much water do various fruits hold?

b) What is the Rose of Jericho?

c) Why do different mineral waters have different tastes?

d) Why does an egg float in salt water?

e) What are the special properties of Bärlappsporen?

f) What variety of life does one find in a pond?

One of the favorite activities was building mini dams in a stream!

The second part of the excursion involved getting into groups of about five, formulating research questions, conducting experiments, and presenting results.

The various topics 2c looked at were:

1.  How is the environment (soil) affected by a dam and what causes a dam to break?

2.  Of the following three dams (sand-wood, sand-stone, sand-wood-stone), which will hold back the most water?

3.  Compared to regular water, how do hot, salty and sugary water affect the swelling of the Rose of Jericho?

4.  Can we find at least 10 different water creatures in the nearby pond?

5.  Compared to regular water, do wood, paper, styrofoam, glass and plexiglass float better in salty or sugary water?

We had sunny weather, curious students and excellent presentations!  Many thanks to the entire Naturerlebnispark staff for their hospitality and guidance.

Special congratiolations to Florentine Rom and Dorothea Kozizc who both won the foil and epee competition in their age category. Paul Panzitt won the first place in epee fencing. Ines Kirsten won twice a second place.

Instead, ten brave volunteers from 2C and 3A took their places and entered the competition for the first time. Unavoidably two were not able to participate, but the remaining eight put in a sterling performance.

Out of the 19 teams in the Newcomer’s category Karo Gürtl and Connie Rom (3a) finished fifth, whilst Salome Tarla and Anna Mognon were 9^th.  The teams consisting of Tobi Reiter and Emily Schweighofer and Clara Kupferschmid and Johanna Spreizhofer (who finished in an excellent time!) missed out one pole and were unfortunately disqualified.

Alex Pur (3a) suffered the same fate in the main competition. Despite coming in with an absolutely fabulous time he somehow missed out one pole. Chin up Alex, your time will come! The next opportunity to display your talent will be at the finals on the 28^th!

Despite all the trials and tribulations two of our orienteering pros continued the success enjoyed by previous GIBS teams: Anna Gröll (1b) stepped into her big brothers’ shoes and came in 5^th in the main competition, while Elena Zeiner (3a) narrowly missed out on the top spot, coming in 2^nd!

after the train journey we had survived

to the centimetre restaurant for lunch,

we marched.

With our bellies full,

off to our workshop we flew,

through the afternoon we worked

really hard in the schoolyard.

Our reward?

To the cinema we went,

and there the evening we spent

back to the hostel we walked

and we talked and talked

until somebody knocked

we all slept well

till the morning bell

the treasure hunt we enjoyed

our skills we employed

to the ORF we went

it was a special event

with the train back we went

without spending a Cent.

Und nun eine deutsche Version, für alle, die beim oberen nur spanisch verstanden haben:

Vom 14 bis 24 April waren wir, die gemischte Spanischgruppe aus der 5a/b, gemeinsam mit unseren Professoren Miss Ritter und Miss Fernández in Sant Cugat, einer kleinen, schönen Stadt in der Nähe von Barcelona. In unseren Austauschfamilien konnten wir unser Spanisch üben und die spanische Kultur einmal von innen kennenlernen (Ein besonders schöner Teil – das Essen! – Tortilla de Patatas und Pan con Tomate). Natürlich haben wir auch Barcelona besucht, und die berühmten Sehenswürdigkeiten wie die Sagrada Familia, den Parque Güell oder die Gaudí – Häuser gesehen. Einen anderen Tag waren wir in Figueras, um uns dort das Dalí – Museum anzusehen und die Zeit am Strand zu genießen. Der letzte Tag unserer Reise war gleichzeitig San Jordi, der katalonische Feiertag der Bücher und Rosen.  Leider verging die Zeit viel zu schnell, aber es hat uns allen gut gefallen. Wir freuen uns schon auf den 25 Juni, wenn unsere „Intercambios“ uns auch in Graz besuchen werden!

Our days were filled with talks, workshops, church services and fantastic concerts (e.g. Wise Guys). It was a great experience and we hope to take part again in 2015 in Stuttgart.

Now, when someone says “Jolly factory”, you probably think of a big, bright and colorful factory. Sadly, it wasn’t big, bright or colorful at all, but rather old and worn down, with different smells and lots of noise in the different production areas. However, it was really interesting!

With our friendly guides we were allowed to tour the factory and even take photos of everything. Wide-eyed, we watched the machines and employees work. From coloring the lead to the finished pencil – everyone was fascinated watching the process of the color pencil production and hearing interesting facts about the company. We learned a lot about the pencils and the factory itself, like, for instance, that the wood that is used comes from Europe as well as from China, that Jolly (which is actually called Brevillier Urban) also makes pencils for other companies, and that the mother company is in Hirm, Burgenland.

At the end of our tour we all got a surprise bag that was filled with all kinds of pencils and pens and then we were invited to sit down and enjoy yummy sandwiches and drinks. The tour was really interesting – and I’m quite sure, not one of us had ever seen so many pencils before!
