The European Youth Parliament – Zagreb

Zagreb2web

Over 200 students, 30 countries and 3 Austrian delegates from GIBS

The 68th International Session of the European Youth Parliament (EYP) took place in Zagreb this year. For 10 days 205 delegates from over 30 countries were hosted in the Croatian capital. After two days of team-building in the committees, the actual committee work started. The delegates from all over Europe discussed current issues, like the rise of ethnic nationalism, the role of energy efficiency or high youth employment.

The three delegates from GIBS, Joel Kurzweil (8b), Cornelia Krenn (8a) and Inez Sauer (8b) were selected during a national session and formed part of a larger Austrian delegation of six students. They were accompanied to Croatia by Ms Kettemann.

In addition to the committee work of three days (which ended with agreeing on resolutions which would then be presented at the General Assembly) there were events organised every day: from a Eurovillage (presenting typical national food), to a Euroconcert (delegates could show their musical talents), a quiz night with Croatian high school students or a movie night.

The delegates had ten amazing days, as Joel explains, “EYP is the perfect combination of hard political work and having fun while experiencing different European cultures. At EYP, young Europeans are truly united in diversity. At this session, I made friends from all across Europe, and had lots of interesting discussions about current European issues. Attending EYP is performing an act of European citizenship. Once you attend a session, you get addicted to EYP quite fast and want to do it again and again. The only bad thing about EYP is having to say goodbye to friends you’ve made during a session. Luckily, you will probably meet them again at another EYP event!”
