Our Basque Experience

From the 7th to the 15th of October the Spanish group from 7AB went on their trip to Spain. We lived near San Sebastian, also called Donosti, in the Basque Country. On the bus on the way from the airport in Bilbao to the point in San Sebastian where our host families were going to pick us up, every one of us was already very afraid. We thought we wouldn’t be able to say any more than „Hola“ and „Qué tal“. But when we met our families and realised how nice and welcoming the Basque people are, we soon noticed that even talking in a foreign language wasn’t that hard.

Our teachers Ms. Ritter and Mr. Kozak and the teachers from the school in Andoain (the village where most of our „intercambios“ lived) had come up with a great programme for us. Not only did we see a lot of different places all over the Basque Country – for example the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and amazing cliffs (flysh) on a boat trip- but we also had enough time to go shopping and explore the cities by ourselves. We saw many different beaches and some of us went into the sea. We even crossed the border to France one day!

We also got to see and experience the Spanish school-system, attending the lessons on three mornings. All in all the weather was good (we had more hot days than rainy ones).

We have all made good friends with the Basques, which was made noticeable on the last day, when we had to say goodbye and almost everyone ended up in tears! But the good thing is that we will see them all again in March, when they will come to visit us in Austria!
