School Opening Ceremony

On Friday, 3rd December, 2010 the Offical Opening Ceremony of our new school building took place.

Dr. Claudia Schmied, Minister of Education, Art and Culture and Bishop Dr. Egon Kapellari and many other guests of honour celebrated with the whole GIBS school community the wonderful renovation of the former PädAk building and its transformation into the GIBS premises.

Mrs. Schmied surprised us with an address that contained the most interesting details about the building and described it as a piece of art. She went on to discuss the history and cornerstones of GIBS and also how principal Fleischmann was the driving force which propelled the project.

In his speech Dr. Kapellari described brutalism, the style in which the building was built. With a very fine sense of humour the Bishop drew parallels between the reliable material béton brut or raw concrete with the reliability of the people and institutions involved.

Principal Fleischmann thanked all the decision makers, the representatives of the political bodies, the Ministry of Education and the Landesschulratspräsident, Mag. Erlitz, for their commitment making the move possible.

Imelda Görög, as the provisional headteacher, portrayed her view of her future responsibilities.

Students from class 3 B presented their self-composed song, “Make your footprints good prints” which is also the name of the project, which earned them a “Global Action School” award.

The “cowgirls” of 6 B presented a lovely Line Dance and Julia Schöpfer sang “By the side of the Road”, a moving ballad of love.

In two separate panel discussions educators and politicians, parent, student and staff reps were interviewed about their views of nhe new building and its impact on learning and working at the new GIBS.

The GIBS staff choir well-known for their humorous presentations let us know about the chores of moving in their “Banana Box Song” and about the final arrival of the school in Eggenberg in “Good News”.

A big thank you to the Diozese of Graz Seckau for the delicious buffet which all the guests delighted in.

All in all it was a wonderful celebration to guarantee a successful start into the new decade of GIBS in Eggenberg.

Elisabeth Fleischmann
